Racebending Towards a Better Future: How People of Color Are Putting Themselves Into Stories They Were Written Out OF

I spoke at 2017's Theorizing the Web about racebending, a process where fans are responding to all-white casting notices by imagining people of color back into the stories that they were written out of. It’s a clapback to whitewashing. By tapping into the social, communal, responsive nature of internet fandom, fans are able to use all the online tools at their disposal —fanfiction, gifs, and fanart— to spread racebent visions of better, more realistic representation of worlds.
